Rangers find themselves in a difficult situation trying to catch up with Celtic and having a relatively smaller budget, according to Stefan Bienkowski.
The Transfermarkt journalist told the Daily Mail [21 September] that Gers have spent less than half of what their rivals have on transfers but also earned less than a third of what Celtic did in total sales over the last five years.
It’s been revealed that the Ibrox outfit have made £54.5million in player sales in the last five years in comparison to Celtic’s £153.3million.
Bienkowski said: “Rangers are in a very difficult situation: trying to catch a historic rival that fans demand they challenge for every trophy each season, despite having a much smaller budget.
“The club have spent less than half of what Celtic have on players in the last five seasons, and earned less than a third of Celtic’s total in sales.
“That’s a lot of money spent on older players with next to no sell-on value for Rangers, but signed because – at least on paper – they can add something to the first team immediately. That’s not to say that Rangers haven’t picked up some good young players.
“Mohamed Diomande in particular looks like a fantastic prospect. But I would say the club’s emphasis on the short-term demands of ‘being Rangers’ are getting in the way of their long-term goals.”
Rangers need a proper structure in place to close to gap with Celtic
The financial disparity presents a formidable challenge for Gers, signalling deep-seated structural issues that could exacerbate the gulf between the two rivals.
The Ibrox outfit’s approach of investing in older players for immediate impact, while potentially beneficial in the short term, lacks a sustainable strategy for player development and resale value, which Celtic have finely tuned.
This not only affects their competitive edge but also the club’s financial health, as lower sales revenue means less reinvestment in the squad.
If Rangers continue without a robust plan focusing on youth development and strategic signings with future sale potential, the financial and competitive gap with Celtic will likely widen.
On paper, the Hoops’ squad also seems significantly better and the gap in the league table is a clear indicator of it.
The recent Old Firm derby also proved the gulf between the two sides and Gers cannot let this continue.
In other Rangers news, a sensation has sealed an out-of-window transfer out of Ibrox to join a British club.
