Rodrigo Bentencur could help Tottenham qualify for the Champions League next season after what Ange Postecoglou said about his training performances.
The 27-year-old had an up-and-down campaign last season which was hampered by consistent injury troubles.
This limited him to just 1007 minutes of Premier League action across 23 appearances [FotMob].
The Uruguay international appears to be on the comeback trail with Postecoglou singling him out for his training showings while speaking to Football London on 15 August.
He said: “He came on in the second half last week and I thought he looked really good, has looked good in training, so hopefully that is where some of our improvement comes from.
“Guys who last year for one reason or another couldn’t get to the levels we know they can and if we can do that with guys like him and the ones who had good seasons last year, if we can improve them as well, that improvement I am looking for will be there.”
Rodrigo Bentancur to give Tottenham CL boost
Losing out on Champions League qualification to Aston Villa last year was frustrating but Spurs were much improved under their new Aussie boss.
Moving into his second campaign in North London, he will be without a recognised number six after Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg joined Marseille.
This will put added pressure on someone like Bentancur to step up and fill the defensive-minded void left by the Dane’s exit.
Considering the former Southampton man racked up 2.2 tackles won and 2.06 clearances per 90 [Fbref], that could take some doing.
With that being said, there is no reason why the Uruguayan can’t do that. Despite not being the most physical, he puts up positive defensive stats.
Over the last year, the midfielder has put up 2.06 tackles, 1.52 interceptions and 1.34 blocks per 90 [Fbref], which is impressive considering his offensive numbers aren’t to be sniffed at either.
This is backed up by his performance in the preseason friendly against Bayern Munich where he kept up a 100 per cent tackle success and won two duels [FotMob].
Alongside either Eves Bissouma or Pape Sarr, Spurs will have a useful midfield combination going forward and back.
Bentancur completed 6.45 progressive passes and 0.99 successful take-ons per match in the last year which allows Postecoglou’s side to get up the pitch quickly.
Tottenham conceded 61 goals last season where the 27-year-old could hardly feature but with him in the team, they could see fewer chances fall to the opposition.
