Everton’s former CEO Keith Wyness has warned Premier League chiefs will “come down” on clubs like Newcastle United if they inflate transfer fees to bypass financial rules.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as chief executive at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the top-flight will “turn a blind eye if the valuations are sensible”.
Football Insider revealed on 26 July that Odysseas Vlachodimos’s move to Newcastle is likely to be assessed by the Premier League over whether its value has been inflated.
The Athletic reported on 21 July that Nottingham Forest paid £35million to secure Elliot Anderson’s signature, while Vlachodimos’s move to St James’ Park was worth around £20million.
That is despite the Greece international playing just seven times for Forest since joining from Benfica for a reported £7.7million last summer (2023).
Both deals were completed before the unofficial 30 June deadline with Newcastle and Forest close to breaching financial rules and risking a potential points deduction.
Wyness hands Newcastle FFP warning with Premier League probe expected
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “These FFP signings are going to be frowned upon.
“If they can maintain sensible valuations, then everyone will be okay with it.
“It’s fair to let clubs trade players. We know there may be a hint of PSR, but if you’ve got assets – why can’t you trade them?
“But when it starts becoming ridiculous, like trying to sell a player for £50million when he’s played once – that would be a problem.
“I think the Premier League have sent the message already. They’ll turn a blind eye if the valuations are sensible.
“They’ve sent signals to Newcastle and other clubs, if you start taking the mickey, we’re going to come down on you.
“I think that’s where it’ll end up.”
In other news, Newcastle could accept £20m Kieran Trippier bid.
