Bryan Gil’s return from the international wilderness with Spain showed he may still have plenty to offer Tottenham in the future.
Gil, who is on loan at La Liga side Girona from the Lilywhites, won his first Spain cap in over three years after coming off the bench in their 3-2 win over Switzerland, scoring eight minutes after his introduction.
The 23-year-old’s goal put La Roja 2-1 up just five minutes after Switzerland had equalised, only for the visitors to do so again before Bryan Zaragoza’s 93rd-minute penalty won it for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Spurs have sent Gil out on loan in three of the four seasons since he arrived in North London, but having justified his international recall, the Spaniard could yet return to make an impact at his parent club.
Bryan Gil gives Tottenham pause for thought with what he did
Although he only entered the fray for Nico Williams on the hour mark, Gil made one hell of an impact, scoring inside eight minutes and being a constant attacking presence in the final third.
Scoring with his only shot on goal, Gil also maintained a 100 per cent success rate with both his dribble attempts and a single tackle [FotMob], with a further four ball recoveries made in his time on the pitch.
Completing 78 per cent of his attempted passes, with five in the final third and creating a chance to accumulate 0.37 expected goals and assists, Gil provided the impetus Spain needed to take the points.
Despite Gil only having 24 touches in total [FotMob], five came in the Swiss box, showing just how front-footed his display was as the winger won three of his four ground duels down the left flank.
Gil’s half-hour cameo proved to be a key difference-maker as the European champions concluded a near-perfect 2024, and Ange Postecoglou will certainly be wondering if he’ll get a chance to see the best of the Girona loanee in a Lilywhites shirt.
