'Strange': BBC pundit says VAR made a really weird mistake during Tottenham vs Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur picked up an important win against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs managed to come back from 1-0 down to win 3-1 against the Bees after a shocking start early in the game.

Bryan Mbeumo put Brentford 1-0 up after just 22 seconds, but Tottenham came to life later in the day, running out 3-1 winners.

However, as always, this game wasn’t without controversy.

Indeed, Guglielmo Vicario seemed to handle the ball outside the area in the second-half, but, despite serious protestations from Kristoffer Ajer and Thomas Frank, the referee didn’t give anything.

Speaking to the BBC, Nedum Onuoha was discussing this incident and the pundit was baffled by the referee’s inaction here.

Nedum Onuoha shocked by Guglielmo Vicario handball

Onuoha was surprised by this decision, claiming that it was very strange.

“Earlier Gugliemo Vicario comes out of his area and makes three attempts at touching the ball,” Onuoha said.

From the angle we see the third touch, if there was another angle of it, I think they would say that it came outside the box, so that would be a red card.”

“It is strange that the VAR has missed that, very strange, because that is a big moment in the game.”

Guglielmo Vicario got lucky

Guglielmo Vicario is very lucky that this handball wasn’t called.

The Italian has been under the spotlight in recent times due to his lack of influence from set-pieces.

Vicario came into this game with serious question marks around his form, and if he was sent off here, the heat would only have been turned up.

From a Brentford point of view, VAR have plenty to answer for here, but Tottenham will feel very fortunate to have got away with this one.

Tottenham ultimately managed to get the win here, and this could be a real platform for Ange Postecoglou’s side to now build on
