Alan Hutton has branded the decision to send off Jefte a “disgrace” in Tuesday night’s defeat for Rangers to Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden Park.
Hutton, speaking with Allan McGregor and Steven Thompson on BBC Sportscene [13 August] made his feelings known about the call made by Italian referee Marco Guida after Jefte was penalised for jumping for an aerial duel.
The young Brazilian was dismissed just five minutes into the second half at Hampden Park for a second yellow card, provoking the ire of the home support who dished out a scathing reaction as Guida and his team of officials left the pitch.
The Ukrainian outfit went on to win 2-0 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate to send the Gers out of the running for the Champions League, stirring the debate on whether second bookings should be checked by VAR.
“It’s a disgrace – if he was shown a straight red then [the VAR] would be in his earpiece to tell the referee to have another look at it, but because it’s two yellows, he won’t look at it,” former Gers man Hutton said.
“You heard the fans when he was coming off the pitch – everybody understood that was never a yellow card.”
“I think anyone with two working eyes could see that,” added McGregor.
Rangers raging after Jefte red
Having watched the incident multiple times, from multiple angles, it’s incredible to fathom how Guida saw any malicious intent or any danger in Jefte’s challenge on the Dynamo player.
And there lies the issue – Guida was never instructed to watch the duel again on the monitor because it would not have been to correct a straight red card, merely a dismissal for two cautions.
Whilst it remains a difference in the officials’ handbook, Rangers are still left at a numerical disadvantage with the tie firmly in the balance.
Try as Philippe Clement’s team might, 10 men doing the work of 11 – mixed in with some of the naivety which comes from losing the experience Clement has over the summer – eventually saw the Light Blues’ efforts unravelled as Dynamo switched up a gear and stole in with the two late goals.
It’s been a sluggish start for the Gers, who despite dominating Motherwell at the weekend only staggered to a 2-1 win at Hampden.
St. Johnstone provide the next test in the second round of the Scottish League Cup, already a must-win if not only for the morale of the club and fanbase.
