'Aye, I like' - Pundit view: 'Aggressive, Pacy' ace could sign for Rangers as Celtic ties dismissed

Scott McKenna’s links to Celtic don’t stop him from being a positive signing for Rangers if they can complete a deal this summer, says Derek Ferguson.

The Scottish defender has admitted he is not surprised to be linked to both sides of the Old Firm after leaving Nottingham Forest this summer, and would “never rule anything out” [Scottish Sun, 12 June].

He has previously indicated he was a Hoops supporter in a 2020 interview with the Scotsman while at Aberdeen and a teammate of Lewis Ferguson.

The now-Bologna captain’s father Derek is therefore very familiar with the way McKenna, 27, plays and is a big fan, believing he would be very useful for Philippe Clement at Ibrox.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Aye, I like Scott McKenna. I’ve watched him often enough when my boy was up at Aberdeen and played with him.

“Aggressive. Pacy. Very experienced.

“What people will touch on this and they’ll say, ‘Oh he’s a Celtic supporter’.

“He might be. His allegiance might lean towards Celtic. It doesnae matter.

“What you’ve got is a good player who would come in and do a job for Rangers.

Rangers could push to sign former Nottingham Forest defender

Rangers Connor Goldson (1)
Rangers veteran Connor Goldson is on his way out this summer to leave space in the back line.

Connor Goldson has been the top central defender at Ibrox for a number of seasons but looks set to leave for Aris Limassol after Clement confirmed a concrete bid had arrived prior to the friendly at Birmingham [Rangers TV, 24 July].

The vice-captain’s departure surely requires a senior centre-back to come in this summer after just 20-year-old Clinton Nsiala was added at the position.

McKenna would fit the bill and is available so part of the space on the wage bill that departures for the likes of of Goldson and James Tavernier will clear could go on the Scotland international if a deal is to be done.

In other Rangers news, senior Ibrox figures have an “issue” with a move for Lawrence Shankland.
