Tottenham fans will be thrilled to finally see James Maddison rediscovering his form despite losing 3-2 to Brighton on Sunday (6 October).

The 27-year-old has experienced a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign, even with two goals and two assists for his first six Premier League appearances, especially after missing out on Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate chose against taking the Spurs man to the summer competition and that trend looks to have continued with England’s new head coach Lee Carsley at the helm.

However, with a goal against Brentford, an assist against Ferencvaros in the Europa League, and now a goal in the defeat to Brighton, Maddison will be vying for a spot in the international squad.

More importantly, though, Postecoglou finally has his main playmaker back to his best as Spurs attempt to compete in the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League.

James Maddison lauded for Tottenham goal despite Brighton defeat

Maddison clearly impressed Manchester United and Tottenham legend Dimitar Berbatov, who said live via Sky Sports [6 October, 5:33pm]: “This is the perfect goal starting from the keeper. Great composure.

“Timo Werner with the pass to Maddison. Yes, it was a mistake by the keeper but it was perfect.”

The 27-year-old scored with an xG of just 0.1, punishing Brighton for their slack defending, unleashing a total of three shots from inside the box, and maintaining an 85 per cent pass completion [FotMob].

Five of his passes were made into the final third, also winning 100 per cent of his tackles and making three recoveries.

Indeed, he also won two fouls as Brighton’s players struggled to get to grips with him, while entering into seven ground duels.

It should be noted, though, that not one of his passes were defined as ‘key’ prior to his departure in the second half [WhoScored].

Maddison was all over the park, causing a nuisance for the opposition, but he was unable to claim all three points by himself as Ange Postecoglou’s side fell apart at the Amex Stadium.

With a European tie upcoming against AZ Alkmaar, and an interesting clash against Manchester City in the EFL Cup, Postecoglou’s main man looks to have stepped up once again.

In other Tottenham news, one star cannot hide behind his 93% display after being slammed as “frightening” v Ferencvaros.
