Dejan Kulusevski was a rare bright spark for Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham were condemned to a 3-2 defeat by Bayern Munich on Saturday (10 August).
The Sweden international opened the scoring in the first minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though this was one of the few positives during the first half for Spurs.
Goals from Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller saw Bayern take a convincing 3-1 lead into the half-time break, with Postecoglou’s men left with lots to do to prove themselves in front of a home crowd.
With Vincent Kompany’s side dominating for much of the match, keeping 59 per cent of possession and letting off 20 shots compared to Tottenham’s seven, there were few chances for Spurs to get back into the game [FotMob].
Even with Son Heung-min playing 82 minutes, and Rodrigo Bentancur and Timo Werner coming on at half-time, Kulusevski looked to be the only player pushing for more, albeit a friendly fixture.
Dejan Kulusevski impresses as Tottenham face second defeat v Bayern Munich
With Bayern holding much of the possession, it is no surprise to see the winger’s pass completion drop to 69 per cent, compared to his 77 per cent average in the Premier League last season [FotMob].
However, with a 67 per cent shot accuracy, the 24-year-old was more than clinical enough to bring his side back into contention with 30 minutes remaining, linking up well with Lucas Bergvall.
James Maddison, 27, and Brennan Johnson, 23, continue to show few bursts when going forward, especially during pre-season, so Kulusevski must take it upon himself as the go-to man at Spurs.
Even with Son still brandishing the captain’s armband, the Swede has proven himself to be one of the most important players for Postecoglou, though some of his underlying statistics will need to improve.
While he ranks in the top 94 percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 81 percentile for progressive passes [FBref], he needs to be more involved in the meaningful moments.
There is certainly potential for Kulusevski to be the next star at Spurs, but ranking in the top 64 percentile for non-penalty goals and top 26 percentile for assists will not cut it at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
