Tottenham have been without a true number nine since Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich last summer.
The 31-year-old notched 279 goals in 428 appearances for Spurs between 2013 and 2023, becoming a legendary figure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and leaving a huge hole after his departure.
Ange Postecoglou hopes to have solved that issue with the club-record signing of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for £65million [BBC Sport], and he was thrown straight into the starting XI.
Solanke was given the nod during Spurs’ 1-1 draw against newly promoted Leicester City on Monday 19 August, trudging off the pitch without his first goal for the Lilywhites.
Postecoglou will be very disappointed to only pick up one point against the Foxes, and if not for his striker’s lack of clinical finishing, it could have been a different story.
Dominic Solanke fails for Tottenham v Leicester City
There were a lot of positives to like about the 26-year-old at the King Power Stadium. He was extremely involved in the build-up, was successful in 100 per cent of his dribbles, won 100 per cent of his tackles, and won 88 per cent of his ground duels [FotMob].
While all of those statistics provide Spurs with a talented figure up front, his failure to hit the back of the net may already be a concern, albeit only playing one game of the season so far.
Solanke hit the target with all three of his shots, taking home a 100 per cent shot accuracy, but with all three saved, including a big chance missed, Postecoglou’s side could only earn a single point.
Last season, he may have notched 19 goals for Bournemouth, but he also missed 14 big chances for the Cherries, with only eight players having more – the likes of Erling Haaland, Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson [FotMob].
These missed opportunities saw him finish the campaign with a 17.4 per cent conversion rate. Compared to Spurs’ options, Son Heung-Min boasted a 20 per cent conversion rate, having played through the middle.
The South Korean only hit the back of the net two times fewer but was more clinical. Given that he was the only Spurs player to hit 20 big chances created, it could be suggested that the club needed to invest the money in a creative force instead.
