Ange Postecoglou’s side got back to winning ways in style by beating West Ham 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (19 October).

Spurs made the worst possible start in North London when Mohammed Kudus opened the scoring in the 18th minute.

However, they responded well, with Dejan Kulusevski equalising before the break, before Yves Bissouma, an Alphonse Areola own goal, and Son Heung-min sealed all the points for Postecoglou’s side.

West Ham had salt rubbed in their wounds when Kudus was sent off late on, rounding off a miserable day for Julen Lopetegui’s side and the perfect one for Postecoglou and his players.

However, despite picking up three points and beating their fierce London rivals 4-1, it wasn’t an entirely perfect afternoon for Postecoglou, with James Maddison’s performance a particular concern.

After his England snub, Maddison would’ve wanted to respond in the right way. However, instead, he was substituted at half-time, with Spurs playing much better in the second half without him.

As a result, Andy Gray thinks Postecoglou has an issue concerning the midfielder.

While speaking via beIN Sports (19 October, 1:34 pm), Gray said, “That’s another game Maddison has started and hasn’t finished. Now that’s a problem for Ange.”

Maddison had some bright moments in the first half. As per Sofascore, he completed 91 per cent of his passes, with five of those key, which on paper appears impressive.

However, there was a lot not to like about the 27-year-old’s performance, which Postecoglou clearly noticed.

He attempted seven crosses into the box, with only two of those accurate. In addition, his one long ball forward was inaccurate while only one of his three dribbles was successful.

However, it was defensively where he really struggled, winning just two of his five ground duels and giving possession away 10 times.

With Dejan Kulusevski excelling recently and once again in the creative midfield role against West Ham, Maddison will need to improve his form if he wants to keep his place in the team.

Otherwise, Gray might be right, and Postecoglou might have a problem trying to fit Maddison in.
