Brennan Johnson continued to silence his critics by getting on the scoresheet as Spurs beat Brentford 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (21 September).
Ange Postecoglou and his players found themselves in a must-win game against the Bees.
Although they advanced in the Carabao Cup by beating Coventry City 2-1 on Wednesday (18 September), their performance was far from ideal, with the North London side relying on two late goals from substitutes to save them at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
As a result, supporters would have expected a big performance on Saturday. Therefore, when Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead in the first minute, Postecoglou would have no doubt felt as though the world was crashing down around him.
However, goals from Dominic Solanke, Johnson and James Maddison turned things around for the Australian, with ex-Tottenham defender Michael Dawson hailing Johnson’s strike.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (21 September), Dawson said, “He got the goal in midweek, this will give him huge, huge confidence for (Brennan) Johnson.
“It’s a fantastic strike from a tight angle, 2-1 Spurs.”
Brennan Johnson responds to critics once again for Tottenham v Brentford
It was Johnson who netted the winner off the bench against Coventry City.
After the abuse the 23-year-old has received lately, which led to him deactivating his personal Instagram, two goals in as many games is the perfect response.
He took his strike well, and will hopefully be able to build on what has been a much better week for the Welshman. However, there is still room for improvement.
As per Sofascore, Johnson completed just 70 per cent of his passes against Brentford, with only one of them key. He also missed one big chance in addition to his goal, registering six shots overall.
Furthermore, he lost all four of his ground duels, while giving possession away 11 times and committing two fouls.
Therefore, while his recent upturn in goalscoring form will no doubt get supporters off his back, Postecoglou will still be keen for the winger to improve in other aspects of his game.
In other Tottenham news, a £100million transfer guess has been made as the club plan contract talks with a big-name star.
