Guglielmo Vicario once again looked vulnerable as Spurs beat Brentford 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (21 September).
It has not been a good week for Spurs’ goalkeepers.
Fraser Forster was far from his best in the 2-1 win against Coventry City on Wednesday (18 September), with Bryan King calling for Spurs to replace him.
And Vicario didn’t do much better as Spurs claimed a much-needed three points against the Bees.
Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead inside the first minute. However, goals from Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and James Maddison turned things around for Postecoglou.
It takes a bit of pressure off of the Australian. However, after watching Vicario’s performance, it seems as though he has a fresh problem to consider in North London.
Guglielmo Vicario struggles for Tottenham v Brentford
Vicario is the club’s undisputed number one, and Postecoglou doesn’t have any other high-quality options to call on in his place.
Therefore, his recent struggles will be a particular concern for the 59-year-old.
Vicario did a lot right against Brentford. As per Sofascore, he made five saves, preventing 0.29 goals, and completed 89 per cent of his passes.
In addition, seven of his nine long balls forward were accurate, and he also made three high claims. However, he also made one error which led to a shot.
Furthermore, midway through the second half, the shot-stopper appeared to handle the ball outside of the penalty area.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (21 September, 4:33 pm), Alex Crook said, “We’ve seen the good, bad and ugly of the Spurs goalkeeper Vicario this afternoon.
“You may remember in the first half he got away with one when he was dispossessed inside his own penalty area. He’s made a couple of really good saves to keep Spurs in front.
“He has also escaped what looked like a pretty clear handball outside of the area.
“(Thomas) Frank the Brentford manager so incensed, he was shown a yellow card for his protests. It is not difficult, he is wearing bright orange Vicario, surely the referee should have spotted it.”
While Vicario made some key saves, his mistakes could have proved costly for Postecoglou.
Therefore, the Spurs boss must ensure he has a word with his goalkeeper and looks to get his head in the right place ahead of what will be a crucial few weeks.
In other Tottenham news, Daniel Levy has secured a “win-win deal” with a last-minute agreement.
