Tottenham were tremendous as they cruised to a 5-0 win against Southampton on Sunday, but Dominic Solanke left the pitch with much to answer for.

The England international started for the North Londoners at the St Mary’s Stadium on 15 December and put in a lousy display compared to those around him.

While most players were brilliant on the day, the former Bournemouth striker couldn’t do much despite the Saints leaking goals in the opening 45 minutes.

James Maddison, who hasn’t been at his best recently, got on the scoresheet twice, with Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr also finding the back of the net.

Solanke struggled for 82 minutes before being hooked for Will Lankshear.

When the 27-year-old was on the pitch, he didn’t have much of an impact, completing just 13 touches of the ball and 71 per cent of his passes, as per FotMob.

The Englishman created zero chances, had his lone shot blocked, and registered a combined xG and xA of 0.28, far below expectations for a number nine in a game dominated by Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Solanke wasn’t defensively sound for Tottenham either, committing four fouls and losing all five duels.

The Australian manager has relied on the 27-year-old this season, giving him 13 Premier League starts, but the centre-forward needs to get moving before he is axed from the team.

Postecoglou doesn’t have many options up front with Richarlison injured and Timo Werner stinking out in the last few matches, but the Australian head coach surely won’t tolerate any more of such displays from his preferred striker.

In other Tottenham news, a Crystal Palace chief has been tipped to take control of Spurs.
