Idrissa Gueye has been in decent form for Everton this season with the midfielder often getting the nod over his teammates from Sean Dyche.
There have been times when the Senegal international hasn’t been at his best and summer arrival Tim Iroegbunam has outperformed him but for the most part, he’s been solid.
Senegal faced Malawi in their AFCON qualifiers on Tuesday (15 October) and Gueye was once again in good form.
Sadio Mane managed to scrape his country a win after bagging a goal in the 96th minute, with Senegal now finding themselves second in their group.
Idrissa Gueye proved Everton boss Sean Dyche right
Dyche has chosen to stick with Gueye starting as his defensive-midfielder over other players in his squad this season when he’s been available for selection.
After his performance against Malawi, it’s hard to see how the 53-year-old could justify dropping the midfielder upon his return to Goodison Park.
As per Sofascore, Gueye played 60 minutes of the clash and managed 75 touches in his time on the pitch.
He also managed to maintain a pass accuracy of 85 per cent with three of them being deemed as key passes.
The key pass statistic is one that particularly stands out. The midfielder was partnered with Pape Matar Sarr in defensive midfield but still managed to create some chances for his team.
Gueye did have a shot in the game but it veered off target and left a lot to be desired, much like his attempts at long balls as zero per cent of them were successful.
The midfielders’ attacking work was no doubt intriguing but his defensive work was where he was really impressive.
He won 100% of his aerial duels and of the two duels he attempted on the ground, one came off successfully.
Gueye also managed to make an interception and a tackle in the clash. This performance against Malawi is one of the many reasons the 35-year-old has proven Dyche right to choose him over the likes of Orel Mangala who’s had a torrid time in the international break.
His contributions at both ends of the pitch are invaluable to any team he’s part of and without him in his starting XI, Dyche would no doubt feel a noticeable difference.
