Asmir Begovic admits the 2024/25 season has been “up and down” for Everton thus far due to their slow start.
The Toffees find themselves 16th in the Premier League table after taking five points from their last three games prior to the international break having lost the opening four.
While Begovic – as back-up goalkeeper – hasn’t had much of a say in the Merseyside outfit’s on-pitch performance, he believes there’s still more to come from the team.
“I think so far this year it’s been a little bit up and down, Begovic said on talkSPORT (16 October).
“I think when you look at our performances, you know how we don’t have more points is difficult to say sometimes because we played incredibly well in some of those games we lost and of course those margins and things that happen in those games we have to fix.
“Overall our performance level and commitment level has been very good, with a bit of luck we could have had more points and obviously would be in an even better situation.
“There’s plenty of room for optimism and I think we have a really good group of players, it’s a bit of smaller squad, we’re really quite tight-knit, good characters and we’re looking forward to the season ahead”.
Everton need to continue their run of form against Ipswich
Everton are set to face newly promoted Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday (19 October).
Prior to Everton undergoing a resurgence of sorts before the international break, the context of that clash may have been viewed differently and Kieran McKenna’s men may even have been viewed as favourites by some.
However, as the Toffees have found themselves in decent form getting five points from their last three top-flight clashes, the tables have seemingly been turned – especially considering Ipswich were hammered by West Ham last time out.
Players such as Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil have been two of the brightest sparks in Sean Dyche’s team and the 53-year-old will no doubt be looking towards both of them to lead the charge and take all three points away from home.
If they manage to do so and other results go their way, Everton could be five points clear of the drop zone and on par with points with teams such as Manchester United.
Only time will tell whether the Toffees continue their unbeaten run but one thing is for sure, there hasn’t been a better time for them to face the Tractor Boys.
