Ex-Everton coach details moment that brought 'Demons' back to Goodison Park

Alan Kelly has said that Carlo Ancelotti leaving Everton in 2021 brought back “demons” to Goodison Park.

In an interview with The Athletic (16 October), the former Everton goalkeeping coach explained that Ancelotti’s arrival in 2019 was a ray of hope for the club.

However, the Toffees faithful were left in tatters as the Italian manager left to join Real Madrid one and a half years later, putting the club in trouble again.

“Carlo [Ancelotti] leaving had a massive effect on everyone because we had this incredible manager and there was hope”, Kelly said.

“An exceptional man, as well as one of the best managers ever.

“The way he came in, put people at ease and allowed them to do their jobs was incredible, backed up by [his son] Davide, who had tactical nous and understanding of football.

“He had a willingness to be receptive and that brings everyone in.

“When he left, the demons came back. You went from here [points high] to here [points low].”

Alan Kelly’s Everton and Carlo Ancelotti assessment is right

Kelly was promoted as the first team goalkeeping coach in September 2019 – three months before Ancelotti’s arrival – and had a firsthand experience of the Italian’s management.

Having since worked under Rafa Benitez, Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche, his assessment of the impact Ancelotti’s departure had on the Merseyside-based club cannot be disregarded.

While the Toffees did not achieve major feats under Ancelotti, there was some level of excitement and optimism.

Despite only taking charge in December, the Italian led the side to a 12th-place finish in the 2019-20 season.

The following year, the club finished 10th while also reaching the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

Everton, who had three different permanent managers since, have not finished higher than 15th.

The standards at Goodison Park have dropped off, with the club unfortunately battling relegation in the last three seasons.

It is also worth noting that the club have had issues off the field, being docked eight points for breaching FSR rules last season.

In other Everton news, the Daily Mail have reported that The La’s could regroup to perform for Goodison Park’s farewell concert.
