Glenn Hoddle could not believe what he saw as Pedro Porro produced a wonderful moment for Tottenham in a display that showed why he is undroppable.

The 25-year-old was electric for Spurs in the 2-1 win against Ferencvaros at the Groupama Arena on Thursday [3 October] and nearly doubled his side’s advantage in the first half with a spectacular piece of play.

After Porro’s corner deflected back into his path, the full-back nutmegged his defender and unleashed a strike that ricocheted off the woodwork, blowing Hoddle away live on TNT Sports [3 October].

He said: “It was a great bit of play. Little nutmegs and then Porro delivers such a little curler.

“Ah, he’s unlucky. Terrific play from Porro.”

Pedro Porro justified Europa League selection for Tottenham

Fresh off the back of a monumental 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday [29 September], Ange Postecoglou surprised with his decision to start Porro in the Europa League.

Archie Gray impressed at right-back in the 3-0 win against Qarabag and, with a lengthy and congested Premier League and European fixture ahead after the international break, Postecoglou will need to rotate his side often to spread the workload and limit injuries.

Porro has been influential for Postecoglou throughout his time in North London and despite what the 3-0 scoreline suggests, Radu Dragusin’s seven-minute red card at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last time out made for a much more nervy European occasion against Qarabag.

Tottenham
Pedro Porro has been a standout performer for Tottenham this season.

The Spaniard controlled the right-hand side for Tottenham, winning 50 per cent of his duels and was a thorn in the hosts’ side all night with four interceptions and one clearance [Sofascore].

Offensively, Porro showed in Hungary why he is regarded as one of the best attacking full-backs in the Premier League as he completed 100 per cent of his five attempted dribbles and completed 82 per cent of his passes (70/85) – including one key pass [Sofascore].

Those 70 attempted passes is the exact number Porro averages in the Premier League, as per FBref, so this was very much par for the course.

He found teammates with 44 per cent of his long balls, and 28.5 per cent of his crosses, which does leave a lot to be desired.

Porro also lost possession 23 times, as per Sofascore, but his his impact bombing down the wings and establishing himself as a main threat for Tottenham on the flanks made up for his shortcomings in the passing game.

It was well and truly a Man of the Match performance for Spurs from the full-back as Postecoglou made it two wins out of two in the Europa League for his side.
