Tottenham forward Timo Werner is making it difficult for Ange Postecoglou to keep faith after his miss against Ferencvaros on Thursday (3 October).

Speaking on co-commentary for talkSPORT 2 (3 October, 7:16pm), Ray Houghton bemoaned the Spurs star’s poor goal record following his spurned second-half chance to put Ange Postecoglou’s side 2-0 up in their eventual 2-1 win.

Following Pape Sarr’s first-half opener, Werner was played in behind midway through the second period and, after going around the outside of goalkeeper Denes Dibusz, could only find the side netting.

After Alex Crook highlighted Werner’s record of just four goals in his last 42 appearances, Houghton said: “That’s an amazing stat.

“We keep saying he’s getting in all the right positions, but when he gets there he’s just lacking confidence – like that chance, he just made it more difficult for himself.”

Timo Werner faces Tottenham axe with difficult Ferencvaros display

It’s no coincidence that Werner was hooked barely 60 seconds after only his second effort on goal found the side netting, with a zero per cent shot accuracy highlighting a damning sign of his profligacy [FotMob].

The German’s general play was impressive, however, as he completed 87 per cent of his passes and registering 0.55 expected goals and assists combined, 0.36 of which was for the latter.

Despite this, Werner had just three touches in the Ferencvaros box, seeing one shot blocked and his only big chance missed, with a mere two passes made in to the final third from his left-wing position.

Werner could only win 33 per cent of his three on-the-ball duels [FotMob], being dribbled past on one occasion but still chipping in with an interception and recovery apiece in defence.

The 28-year-old’s wing play was effective enough to win five corners for Spurs, but once again, when it came to end product, he could only put in one cross and failed with his only long ball attempt.

With Brennan Johnson coming off the bench to eventually score a second for Ange Postecoglou’s side – who held on to win 2-1 after a late consolation from the hosts – Postecoglou may be minded to bring the misfiring Werner out of the firing line.

This miss at a crucial point in the game did not come back to haunt Spurs, but it was further evidence that the German simply cannot be trusted by Postecoglou.
