Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son put in a man-of-the-match performance in South Korea’s 3-1 victory over Oman in 2026 World Cup qualifying.

Son, who skippers both his club and country, netted in the 82nd minute of the qualifier in Muscat, putting South Korea 2-1 up before finding Min-Kyu Joo to round off the scoring in injury time – his second assist.

The Spurs winger started in attacking midfield as Se-Hun Oh operated in the role Son usually occupies for Ange Postecoglou’s side, but he’s still expected to lead the line against Arsenal on 15 September.

The 32-year-old has already netted two goals this season – both in a 4-0 rout of Everton – and Postecoglou will be hoping Son can continue his international scoring form into the North London Derby.

Tottenham star Heung-Min Son shines in big win for South Korea

A goal and two assists in the last match before a North London Derby is the best possible warm-up for Son and Spurs, as the veteran forward looks to bring his unplayable international form back to his club.

Despite having just 41 touches [SofaScore], Son influenced every aspect of the game for South Korea, completing 83 per cent of his passes and threading through three key passes, two of which were scored.

The Spurs attacker also found a man with one of his two long ball attempts, and scored Korea’s second goal with his only attempt on target; seeing another two efforts blocked earlier in the match.

Operating in a deeper role than usual meant Son was involved with everything in midfield, winning three of his six ground duels and three free-kicks, but failing with his only battle in the air.

Son was also caught offside twice with runs in behind the Oman defence, committed one foul himself and lost the ball 11 times, but his attacking numbers and contribution more than makeup for this.

That’ll also be the view of Postecoglou as all attention turns to the North London Derby, and when Spurs line up against Arsenal on Sunday 15 September, expect Son to be fit and firing for their biggest test of the new season.
