Ange Postecoglou has found it difficult to find a consistent midfield in his Tottenham side, but Pape Matar Sarr may have cemented his spot now.
Spurs have been highly inconsistent in the current campaign, beating West Ham and then losing to Crystal Palace the following week in the Premier League.
Aston Villa were next to come to London on 3 November, and they were dismissed emphatically, as Spurs walked away with a 4-1 victory.
Postecoglou’s midfield options include the likes of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, and James Maddison, with the latter dropped to the bench against Unai Emery.
The manager was asked about Sarr in particular after the game [football.london, 3 November], after he lost his place in the team recently.
“He probably played as much as anyone last year, I rate him so highly,” Postecoglou said.
“His capacity again to work for the team but also the quality he has in breaking open oppositions with his running with the ball. I knew he’d be important today because they’ve got such a hard-working midfield with Onana, Tielemans, McGinn in there, Rogers.”
Pape Matar Sarr should be first-choice at Tottenham
Against Villa in the league on 3 November, many players made a case to be in the starting line-up for the next fixture, but none more than Sarr.
The Senegal international started in the 4-1 win and played the entire fixture, recording a 92 per cent pass accuracy, having one shot on target and making 12 passes into the final third, as per FotMob.
Defensively, the midfielder made three clearances, and two interceptions and won three of his duels.
Having four shots in total, with an expected goal and assist tally of 0.19 against a very talented side, he can still be backed to provide against the lower teams, like Ipswich, who travel to North London next on Sunday 10 November.
Maddison found the back of the net with a sublime free-kick after coming off the bench, but if Postecoglou wants to play Kulusevski in the engine room, Sarr seems like the obvious choice to provide more stability in the midfield.
In other Tottenham news, supporters will be concerned after what Postecoglou said about Cristian Romero.
