'Really Angered' - Pundit reacts to Cantwell refusal & Rangers conflict amid Blackburn exit talks

Todd Cantwell leaving Rangers on any terms is now the only way out of a bad situation amid talks with Blackburn Rovers, according to Derek Ferguson.

Sun journalist Alan Nixon reported via Patreon on 26 August that the Championship club want to sign the midfielder who has asked to leave Ibrox, then followed up with a second Patreon report later the same day that talks are due to seal an exit on a “bargain fee”.

According to Ferguson that will have to do after Cantwell angered the fans by refusing to play, meaning there is no way back for him in Glasgow.

But he can’t understand why the former Norwich ace went from being in love with the club a year ago to insisting on an exit after “normal” conflict with manager Philippe Clement.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Certainly it looks like that because Todd’s refusing to play, which is baffling. You sign a contract with whatever club you sign that contract to play football so for him to down tools like that.

“Fans are really angered by that. So any deal that would get Todd out of the club would be good for Todd because the fans aren’t going to accept him, that’s for sure.

“There’s a lot of anger, bemusement, because a year ago he was saying he loved the club, he loved the fans, everything about it so it’s a strange one how you can have a role reversal.

I get that sometimes you have a wee bit of conflict between a manager and a player, that’s normal. That’s what happens, it’s part of being a footballer.”

Todd Cantwell issues with Rangers boss Philippe Clement ‘normal’

Cantwell seemed to have the perfect manager in Michael Beale when he came to Ibrox, but the former boss proved not to be perfect for the rest of the job and things have never been the same under Clement.

The 26-year-old looks set to leave for a lot less than would have been expected a year ago in what has to be another disappointing exit turn, but at this stage even getting a minimal fee and space on the wage bill is a bonus.

Paying him not to play, even for the B Team, is only making issues greater so the quicker a deal can be reached at Ewood Park the better now.

After Trabzonspor interest came to nothing [Sky Sports, 12 August] it is a relief that a club looks set to provide an exit route, otherwise the Englishman could be set for a hefty pay off and a contract termination [PLZ Soccer, 26 August].

In other Rangers news, a transfer update on what will happen at the striker position before the deadline has emerged.
