Ange Postecoglou must select Pape Matar Sarr to start for Tottenham against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday 29 September.
The 22-year-old scored his first goal of the season in the 3-0 win against Qarabag on Thursday [26 September] and, produced an excellent performance in the Europa League.
Postecoglou singled out the midfielder in his post-match press conference as his influence on this Spurs side shone in North London.
He said: “We got a goal from a set piece. Pape, it’s his first full game and I thought he worked his socks off for the team.”
Pape Matar Sarr should be in the starting lineup for Tottenham
While the 3-0 scoreline suggests a comfortable European outing for Tottenham, the scoreline flatters to deceive on what proved to be a nervy performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Sarr however, is one of the few Spurs players who failed to succumb to the pressure of playing 83-plus minutes with ten men after Radu Dragusin received a red card for his last-man foul on Juninho.
A midfield three of Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison started the 3-1 win against Brentford last weekend but, Postecoglou will need more defensive stability at Old Trafford and Sarr is the perfect solution.
In the Premier League alone, he is in the top 74.4 percentile of Premier League midfielders for aerial duels won at 75 per cent and the 76.9 percentile for overall duels at 61.5 per cent [Fotmob].
Alongside midfield partner Yves Bissouma, the Senegalese international was by far the more dominating presence in the Spurs midfield with Bissouma conceding a penalty which Toyral Bayramov fired wide.
Sarr scored his goal with only one shot on target and dominated the midfield with 92 per cent pass accuracy, completed 100 per cent of his two long ball passes, and won 50 per cent of his duels in North London [Sofascore].
In comparison with his peers, Sarr stands in the top 87 percentile for interceptions with 1.51 per 90 minutes, 84 percentile for progressive passes received at 4.03 per 90, and 77 percentile for pass completion at 87.3 per cent [FBref].
With Wilson Odobert not expected to return until after the international break and Son Heung-min a doubt for the trip to Old Trafford, Kulsevski could be started on the flanks leaving a place in midfield available for Sarr.
Bissouma is unreliable for Tottenham, Sarr needs to build momentum after an excellent outing, the decision makes itself for Postecoglou at Tottenham and it could be the choice that is the decisive factor in claiming all three points on Sunday.
