Tottenham have triggered a one-year extension for captain Heung-min Son, according to Ben Jacobs.

Writing on his X account (16 July), Spurs have extended Son’s stay at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium until 2026.

The 31-year-old entered the final year of his contract but will remain in London for two more years.

Son stepped up following the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, scoring 17 goals and assisting 10 in 35 Premier League appearances.

Tottenham tie down Heung-min Son for another year

Son became the captain in place of Hugo Lloris last summer and was one of the standout performers in the league last season.

Ange Postecoglu relied heavily on his captain during his first season with the club as they missed out on Champions League football next season finishing two points behind Aston Villa in fifth.

He spent most of the season as a striker and thrived there with Richarlison enduring another underwhelming season in North London.

Son will be one of the starting names on the teamsheet next season and his extension will warn off potential suitors.

Tottenham fans will breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing that their captain will be ready to go again for their side and make a push for the Champions League spots next season.

Daniel Levy would never sanction a deal for Son to leave the club, the summer after club-record goalscorer Kane left for Germany.

Postecoglu is still targeting a forward this summer and Tottenham have had a £40m bid for Brentford striker Ivan Toney rejected (Football Transfers, 18 June).

A move for a striker would see Son move back to his preferred position on the left wing, but he proved he is more than capable of being the man to lead the Spurs frontline.

In other Tottenham news, Tottenham to sign Lille star Jonathan David as Ivan Toney transfer alternative.
