Luca Gunter could be set to make his full Tottenham debut in the coming weeks.
Ange Postecoglou is currently without top-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who is expected to be sidelined for months rather than weeks after undergoing surgery for a fracture of his right ankle [via Football London, 27 November].
As a result, Fraser Forster has been filling in for the Italian and will expect to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
Beyond Forster, there aren’t many inspiring options when it comes to goalkeepers in North London, with both Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman yet to make their senior debuts for Spurs.
Therefore, an opportunity could arise for Gunter to make his senior debut for the club in the coming weeks.
Gunter is seen as the number one goalkeeper between the sticks for Spurs’ Under-21s. However, he has missed much of the current campaign through injury.
The 19-year-old recently returned to action as Spurs’ Under-21s were beaten 3-0 away at Sutton United in the National League Cup on Tuesday [3 December], and this development could open up the door for Gunter to make his senior Tottenham debut.
Ange Postecoglou to hand Luca Gunter his debut for Tottenham?
While Spurs’ first team isn’t filled with exciting options between the sticks, there are several younger shot-stoppers coming through at Hotspur Way who are making some noise.
One of those is Josh Keeley, who is currently out on loan at Leyton Orient where he recently made quite the impact. Sam Archer has also demonstrated his potential this season, with the 17-year-old already making his debut for the Under-21s.
However, Gunter is perhaps the most exciting of all of Spurs’ talented young goalkeepers. Therefore, he might have returned to action at just the right time.
December is a busy month, and Postecoglou will want to rotate, perhaps even between the sticks.
While Austin or Whiteman could easily be drafted in for Forster, Postecoglou might decide he wants to take a slight risk and take a look at what Gunter can do.
This could become an even more likely possibility if Spurs were to wrap up qualification to the next round of the UEFA Europa League with a game or two to spare.
Postecoglou has demonstrated this season that he isn’t afraid to throw young players in at the deep end. As a result, with Vicario’s injury in mind, Gunter might have returned from his own injury at just the right time.
