Maeson King could make his debut for Tottenham against Manchester City on Saturday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side were beaten 2-1 in the Premier League by Ipswich Town at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday [10 November].
As a result, they will be desperate to get back to winning ways as club football finally returns after the two-week November international break. However, that will be easier said than done as Spurs travel to the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League [23 November].
And what is already a tough match has been made all the more difficult for Postecoglou as the injuries continue to pile up in North London.
Where the Australian is most impacted is in central defence. Postecoglou has confirmed that both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero will miss out against City [via Football London, 22 November], which leaves the Australian with no choice but to start a pairing of Ben Davies and Radu Drăgușin.
That is unless the manager makes the shock decision to call on King, who was spotted in first-team training on Friday [22 November].
Maeson King to make Tottenham debut against Manchester City?
Spurs posted a montage of first-team training footage ahead of the match with City via their official X account on Friday [22 November].
As per Lilywhite Rose via X [22 November], among those in the video were Luca Gunter, Yusuf Akhamrich, Malachi Hardy, Callum Olusesi and King.
The majority of those academy players are midfielders, with Gunter a goalkeeper. However, King is a defender who can play both at full-back and centre-back.
Therefore, with both of Spurs’ starting two centre-backs unavailable, Postecoglou will likely want to call on someone capable of playing in that position to be part of the matchday squad.
And considering that King has spent time training with the first team ahead of this match, he might be the perfect candidate.
While the 19-year-old is unlikely to start, he could be handed a place on the bench, and should he be needed during the match for whatever reason, the door could open for King to make his Spurs debut.
Jamie Donley was handed his Tottenham debut as an 18-year-old at the Etihad last season. Therefore, Postecoglou clearly wouldn’t be afraid to make this decision if need be.
In other Tottenham news, Graham Potter is now favourite to succeed Postecoglou in North London.
