View: Ange has answer to first-team problem after what 'Superb' Tottenham U21 ace did y'day

Tottenham Under-21s ace Luca Gunter has demonstrated that he can solve a first-team problem for Ange Postecoglou.

It has been an excellent season for the Tottenham Under-21s.

However, they just appeared to run out of steam on Thursday (16 May) as they were beaten 4-0 by Fulham’s Under-21s in the Premier League Cup final at Craven Cottage.

With no recognised central defenders available in the matchday squad, the hosts took advantage of Spurs’ makeshift back-four.

Callum Osmand scored a first-half hattrick to put Fulham in control before Georgios Okkas added a fourth after the break.

It was a disappointing evening for the North London side, but that doesn’t mean that there weren’t any positives for Postecoglou to take away from the clash.

Luca Gunter can become a top goalkeeper for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham

It is not often that a goalkeeper leaves the pitch with his head held high after conceding four times.

However, against Fulham, Gunter was easily Spurs’ man of the match.

Had it not been for the shot-stopper, the scoreline could’ve been far worse.

As per the Tottenham Hotspur Official Website (16 May), the 19-year-old made several “superb saves” to prevent the result from becoming any more embarrassing for his side.

And this will have Postecoglou doing some long-term thinking.

While Gunter is yet to celebrate his 20th birthday, and therefore perhaps a few years away from being ready to make his first-team debut, that could line up perfectly from Spurs’ point of view.

Guglielmo Vicario is the club’s undisputed number one, but they are currently lacking a reliable number two.

Fraser Forster is out injured and isn’t getting any younger, and the club might need to replace him in the coming years.

Gunter could act as that replacement, which could prevent Tottenham from needing to dip into the market.

After his performance in the Premier League Cup final, Postecoglou should consider taking a closer look at Gunter during pre-season.
