View: Ange surely concerned about 100% Tottenham star after recent announcement

Tottenham star James Maddison has experienced a difficult calendar year.

Following his move to North London from Leicester City last summer, Maddison made an impressive start to life at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, an injury sustained in November saw him miss a couple of months of action.

And since his return in January, it is safe to say that Maddison has not been the same player. He has struggled to hit the heights he hit during his first couple of months at Tottenham, and has suffered internationally as a result.

Maddison was not part of Gareth Southgate’s squad which reached the final of the 2024 UEFA European Championship. He would have been hoping to make an instant return to the England fold this season. However, that has not been the case.

Interim England boss Lee Carsley recently named his squad (29 August) for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.

And just like in the Euros, Maddison has once again missed out on a call-up. As a result, Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be growing concerned about the Tottenham playmaker.

In fairness to Maddison, he hasn’t made the worst of starts to the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Spurs’ opening fixture, a 1-1 draw with his former side Leicester City at the King Power Stadium (19 August), saw him grab an assist, while also completing 100 per cent of his dribbles and playing three key passes (Sofascore).

During the 4-0 win over Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (24 August), the 27-year-old once again grabbed an assist, while also playing two key passes. However, he struggled in other aspects of his game, missing one big chance and winning just three of his nine ground duels.

And in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park (1 September), Maddison really struggled. He was only able to complete 80 per cent of his passes, while just one of his six crosses was accurate.

In addition, he was unsuccessful with both of his dribble attempts and was also dribbled past once himself.

Maddison also became something of a pantomime villain against the Magpies, with his off-the-ball antics seeing him booed off the field at St James’ Park.

Postecoglou will be concerned that this latest England snub might once again dent his star midfielder’s confidence.

It has been a while since Tottenham have seen Maddison at his free-flowing best, and if snubs like this continue, it could still be a while until he rediscovers that form.
