Chris Jack has admitted that he would be “really surprised” if Rangers were to sign a free-agent centre-back in the coming weeks.
Question marks have been raised at Ibrox over the lack of defensive depth and quality in Philippe Clement’s squad following the Light Blues’ disappointing 3-0 defeat to Celtic on Sunday (1 September).
Although there is space in the squad for another centre-half after Ben Davies completed a late move to Birmingham, Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack doesn’t expect Clement to add to his squad before the January window.
Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel (4 September, 25:15) he said: “I would be really surprised if Rangers go out and sign another centre-half now.
“I think that [Neraysho] Kasanwirjio deal that was done late in the window, that was the replacement for Davies. What they’ve got now is what they’ll go with at centre-half.”
Are Rangers close to any new signings after the summer transfer deadline?
In an ideal world, Rangers would certainly have at least one more quality centre-back option in their ranks, particularly after the shaky display at Parkhead, but such a move seems incredibly unlikely at this stage.
In Robin Propper and Kasanwirjio, Clement has already bolstered his options while Clinton Nsiala has also been signed with a view towards him being a first-team regular at some point in the future.
Partner that with the fact that both John Souttar and Leon Balogun remain in Glasgow, while Davies’ exit is only temporary and it does seem as though the Gers should have enough options available to try and navigate the next few months.
If there were loads of quality options available in the free agent market, of course, it would make sense for the Light Blues to explore their options but that just isn’t the case at this stage.
Clement and his recruitment team must now spend the next few months assessing the state of their squad and begin plotting their approach for the January window.
In other Rangers news, Clement’s “madness” has been torn into after what the Belgian said following the defeat to Celtic
