Ange Postecoglou would have been delighted to see Tottenham star Cristian Romero get some much-needed rest.
It has been a difficult start to the season for Spurs, particularly in the Premier League.
Although a five-match winning run appeared to be lifting the mood, it all came crashing down as Tottenham were beaten 3-2 by Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday (6 October), despite leading 2-0 at half-time.
Overall, Postecoglou’s side have lost three of their opening seven league matches, marking their worst start to a Premier League season in 16 years, and potentially raising questions over the Australian’s position.
However, it would be unfair to place all of the blame on the 59-year-old. Some of Spurs’ key players have not been at their best, including World Cup-winning defender Romero.
Therefore, Postecoglou would have been thrilled to see the 26-year-old receive some much-needed rest as the centre-back missed Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Venezuela at the Estadio Monumental de Maturín on Thursday (10 October).
Romero was suspended for Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier with Venezuela. However, while the player himself would have been disappointed to miss out, it could prove to be a big boost for his club.
Cristian Romero must show signs of improvement at Tottenham
Romero didn’t have much of a pre-season, returning late after his Copa America success with Argentina. Therefore, that could explain some of the defender’s subpar performances so far this season, which have sparked concern.
Statistically, there has been a lot to love about Romero this season. For example, against Brighton, the centre-back completed 96 per cent of his passes, with one of those key, and made two tackles and three clearances (Sofascore).
However, he has switched off at times in games, characterised by the fact he was dribbled past once at the Amex Stadium.
As a result, while he looks good on paper, some lapses in concentration have let him down and led to Spurs conceding.
It was a similar story on the opening day of the season, as Tottenham drew 1-1 with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium (19 August) despite dominating the match.
That evening, Romero won 100 per cent of his ground duels, made three clearances and completed 93 per cent of his passes. However, he switched off at a crucial moment for Leicester’s goal, something which wouldn’t show up as a statistic, with ex-Spurs scout Bryan King blaming him entirely for the equaliser.
Everybody knows the quality Romero possesses, emphasised by the transfer speculation surrounding the two-time Copa America winner (via TyC Sports, 9 September). Therefore, Postecoglou will hope some rest helps his vice-captain get back to his best.
In other Tottenham news, one player has been speculated to be “unhappy” after what has happened recently.
