Wenham compares 'Fantastic' Tottenham ace to Harry Kane despite what happened y'day

John Wenham claims Dominic Solanke deserved his England call-up after his “fantastic” performances for Tottenham this season.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes Solanke is the most natural alternative to Harry Kane when it comes to English strikers.

Solanke grabbed an assist off the bench against Greece in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday (10 October). However, it would mean nothing, as the Three Lions suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Wembley.

Despite the loss, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – still feels as though Solanke’s time with England will be of huge benefit to him.

“I feel Solanke’s England call-up was deserved,” Wenham said.

“It just goes to show, last year despite everything he was doing for Bournemouth he was completely overlooked. Now that he has made a big move, the door has opened.

“However, I’m pleased for him on a personal level. For me, when Kane isn’t playing, Solanke is a more natural alternative in terms of his style of play than someone such as Ollie Watkins.

“Hopefully he gets some more minutes and can grab a goal. He has been fantastic for Tottenham, and I think being part of this England squad is really good for his confidence.”

Although it wasn’t a start, Solanke would have been delighted to get some minutes against Greece.

With another Nations League match to come away to Finland on Sunday (13 October), the 27-year-old will no doubt be hopeful of once again playing a part.

For Ange Postecoglou and Spurs fans, the main concern will be getting the striker back fit and firing. However, for the player himself, featuring for England can only be a good thing for his confidence.

While not everybody feels as though this call-up was deserved, Solanke has been given the opportunity, and now he must seize it with both hands.
