Tottenham Hotspur star Brennan Johnson has been surveyed by the Welsh media after his performance for his nation against Iceland on Friday night [11 October].
Johnson opened the scoring after just 11 minutes in Reykjavik as Craig Bellamy’s side led by two at the break, only to squander the advantage and emerge with just a point in a 2-2 draw in the Nations League clash.
The 23-year-old has now scored in each of his last seven games for club and country, but will now miss Wales’ game with Montenegro on Monday after a “silly” yellow card.
WalesOnline [11 October] issued Johnson a 7/10 rating, claiming of his performance: “In the right place at the right time for his goal. However, he picked up a rather silly booking that will rule him out of Monday’s clash with Montenegro. Subbed.”
Y Clwb Pel-droed [11 October] also gave the Spurs forward a seven mark: “Johnson continued his fine form in front of goal as he made it seven in seven. You can see he’s playing with real confidence at the moment and i’ts great to see it shine through in a Wales shirt. He will miss Monday’s fixture through suspension.”

To score in seven games on the bounce is impressive for any player at the top level, but to emerge from a crisis of confidence with your own supporters to achieve it is even more admirable.
Johnson – however – will be kicking himself. Not just from a collective viewpoint as his side blew their two-goal buffer, but also that his momentum could be scuppered as his booking rules him out for Monday.
Only featuring for the first half, Johnson was impactful in the times he did get on the ball, fulfilling his xG of 1.01 and acing his only cross with Kieffer Moore in the middle, maintaining an 81% pass accuracy [Fotmob] as he simultaneously took risks to make things happen.
Of his 22 touches, five were in the Icelandic penalty area with three advanced passes into the final third. These figures improve the average of his last three Nations League games, in which he had only executed 17% of his attempted crosses [Sofascore] and converted 20% of his five shots from inside the area – that stat propped up by Friday’s goal.
Johnson has been a revelation in the past few weeks, and a huge reason for Tottenham remaining within four points of the top four amid an inconsistent run.
If anything is to provide individual confidence, it is how he mixes it with Europe’s top five in-form wingers. The Welshman has averaged 0.75 goals per game this season, a stat inferior only to Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola [0.96] of the top five European leagues’ most prolific all-round performers [FBRef].
Ange Postecoglou’s most potent attacking weapon has far outscored his overall xG total of 3.4 across domestic, European and international football, netting his superb seven in seven record.
Johnson could well be the inspiration for the club’s bid to return to the Champions League and finally break their trophy drought.
