Everton have missed a major John Textor bullet after Lyon were handed a provisional relegation and transfer ban due to their financial situation.

The US billionaire Textor was on the verge of an agreement with Moshiri back in September but missed out as The Friedkin Group agreed a deal to buy Farhad Moshiri’s shareholding at Goodison.

This left the 59-year-old looking for a new club after his plans for the Toffees were left “shattered” by the Roma owners [Alan Nixon].

It may have proved beneficial for Textor to focus on one of the clubs he already owned after the latest developments from Lyon.

The Ligue 1 giants are in financial jeopardy and as a result, have been handed a provisional relegation to the second tier and a transfer ban [Fabrizio Romano].

This comes two years on from the net losses of £135.70million (€162.5m) across 2020-21 and 2021-22 which signified the issues surrounding the historic club [The Athletic].

Now a drop down to Ligue 2 seems to be the course of action as a precautionary measure until a potential new investor comes through.

This feels somewhat reminiscent of the Toffees last campaign who were dealt multiple points deductions by the Premier League but, thanks to Sean Dyche and the players, were able to secure survival with plenty of games to spare.

With that being said, these financial issues and punishments could have continued into another season if Textor had come in as owner.

Although it feels like it is taking an age for the takeover of Friedkin to go through, there is no doubt that a bullet has been dodged with the Crystal Palace shareholder missing out on taking control at Goodison.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could surely finally bid farewell to one long-serving star after the recent news.
