Everton may have to make the controversial decision to sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January to avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 27-year-old has slowly found his feet at Goodison Park at the start of the campaign, with two goals in seven Premier League appearances, but his long-term future remains in question with no new contract in sight in the final 12 months of his contract.
Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing the striker to Fenerbahce [Fotomac, 10 October] in January, and the same reports suggest Calvert-Lewin would be open to a new adventure and ending his eight-year spell on Merseyside.
The Toffees cannot afford to let the Dyche regular leave for nothing and must therefore take a chance and cash in on Calvert-Lewin in the January transfer window.
Everton must sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January
It is becoming increasingly likely that Calvert-Lewin will play his football away from Everton next season, with the star forward turning down recent attempts to re-open contract negotiations with the club [i News].
While the England international has split opinion among Evertonians in recent seasons, a renewal of his stay on Merseyside is seemingly out of the question, and the Blues must put the club first and cash in while they still can.
The issue remains of who would lead the line for Everton should Calvert-Lewin be shown the door? Beto has looked nowhere near the required ability this season and the supporters are yet to see what Armando Broja has to offer in a Blues shirt as he continues his rehabilitation.
Kevin Thelwell would be unable to fetch a big figure, but with the forward able to negotiate a Bosman transfer with foreign sides in January, a nominal fee is better than no fee at all.
Everton will surely be able to splash the cash next summer once The Friedkin Group assumes control of the club, but a short-term solution is needed and with the side needing results to pull themselves away from the relegation zone, the decision made on Calvert-Lewin could be a turning point for the club.
Regardless, a decision must be made in the coming weeks on how to approach the winter transfer window. The club must show they mean business and begin the process of touting Calvert-Lewin to interested clubs.
In other Everton news, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is on the Blues’ radar as a decision on Sean Dyche is weighed up.
