Everton will be keen to make it two wins in as many matches when they face Newcastle United ahead of the international break.

The Toffees welcome the Magpies to Goodison Park on Saturday (5 October) as they look to build off of their first Premier League win of the season over Crystal Palace last time out.

Sean Dyche could well be without Jarrad Branthwaite in his backline with reports suggesting the England international could well be a doubt having picked up a new injury in training this week [Joe Thomas, 4 October].

Losing the centre-back would be a massive blow to the Toffees as they have looked a much better side when he has been fit and available, but Dyche could well have been handed a new blow after a recent announcement.

What has happened to Everton star Vitalii Mykolenko at Goodison Park?

In an official statement on Friday (4 October), Ukraine confirmed that Vitalii Mykolenko had withdrawn from the national team squad for the October international break due to injury.

Dyche didn’t mention the defender when he delivered his latest injury round-up ahead of the clash with Newcastle United on Saturday, but it now appears as though he has picked up a new knock.

It is safe to assume that if Mykolenko isn’t fit to travel with the rest of his international teammates for matches against Georgia and the Czech Republic in the next two weeks, he won’t be ready to face Eddie Howe’s side at Goodison on Saturday.

Even if the defender had been withdrawn as a precaution, it seems unlikely that he would then play a game for his club side only a day after the initiation announcement was made.

Everton Vitalii Mykolenko
Vitalii Mykolenko was Everton’s first-choice left-back under Sean Dyche last season.

Everton have next to no depth at fullback already this season, especially with Seamus Coleman sidelined and Nathan Patterson still making his way back from injury so it will be a massive blow if they’re also without Mykolenko as well.

Hopefully, some clarity will emerge from within the club sooner rather than later so that supporters can at least know what the defender’s situation is.
