Graham Potter replacing Sean Dyche as Everton boss could happen quickly once the takeover it done after the England job went to Thomas Tuchel.

According to i News on 18 October the former Brighton and Chelsea boss was spoken to by the FA before appointing the man he replaced at Stamford Bridge, with the talks potentially highlighting the need for The Friedkin Group to move fast if they want him once they are in at the club.

Potter, 49, has been out of work since his chaotic spell in West London ended in April last year but told The Telegraph on 27 September he was ready to return to management.

The Englishman is said to have admirers among the current Goodison Park administration [TBR Football, 5 September], and he was a candidate to replace Dyche during suggestions of an early sacking after a dreadful run of form to start the campaign.

Of more relevance now is the fact that The Friedkin Group have also reportedly been discussing Potter as a potential option to spearhead their upcoming new era on Merseyside [TEAMtalk, 27 September].

Having turned down the likes of Ajax during his hiatus [talkSPORT, 8 April] it is quite possible that the national team job would have been something that could have tempted him.

Farhad Moshiri’s Everton likely would not have been given the turmoil that the current regime has presided over in recent seasons, which is surely not what Potter would have been looking for after what turned out to be an impossible task at Chelsea, but under Friedkin it should be very different.

The unique circumstances of his time at the two-time Champions League winners have arguably helped Potter escape too much damage to his reputation, which was riding high when he was poached from the Amex.

A Friedkin Toffees, with financial concerns removed, and ambition to return to former glories might be the right fit, and his Champions League record at Stamford Bridge actually wasn’t bad – wins home and away over AC Milan and victory over Borussia Dortmund to set up a Real Madrid quarter final before he was sacked.

Potter ready for return after Chelsea sack

Dyche remaining as the face of the new era under The Friedkin Group seems unlikely, at least once his contract expires in the summer, and it seems even the former Burnley boss realises he was brought in for a specific situation that should no longer apply once the takeover goes through [Sky Sports, 5 October].

That is predicted to be by the end of November [Alan Myers, 16 October] and while England talks did not take Potter off the market it demonstrates he could made be unavailable at any point, so if the Friedkins do want him they might decide to move sooner rather than later.

In other Everton news, a pair of mega-rich Premier League sides are expected to go after a Toffees ace in the January window.
