Rangers have once again lost to Celtic in the Old Firm Derby with Philippe Clement’s poor run of form against the Gers’ arch-rivals extending.
Derek Ferguson’s worst fears have been imagined and despite having a plethora of arrivals come in throughout the summer transfer window, Rangers have still managed to find themselves a step behind Celtic.
Although some players put in a good name for themselves, the vast majority of the squad was far from their best.
The first 10 minutes of the tie was all the Gers but after that, the tables turned and, one player who had a particularly bad performance is that of Mohamed Diomande.
Despite being deployed as a holding midfielder for the vast majority of the season, Clement chose their game against Celtic to try the Ivory Coast international in the attacking-midfield role.
He has played there before but after Tom Lawrence’s stellar performance [David Edgar, 24 August] against Ross County during their 6-0 win just last weekend, it was a surprise to see him excluded from the squad.
And, unfortunately for Clement, his gamble didn’t pay off.
Rangers need to start Tom Lawrence over Mohamed Diomande in future games
In the 58th minute, 22-year-old Diomande was hooked for Lawrence and the Gers’ midfield felt instantly more stable.
Their attacks felt more fluid and his keen eye for a pass helped create some chances for his teammates that the Ivory Coast international couldn’t quite do.
The fact that Clement chose to bench the former Derby County man was strange to begin with never mind after the performance Diomande put in.
The season is still young and there is still plenty of time for the Gers to rectify their mistakes as the term goes on but their failure to take all three points from both the Celtic and Hearts games could come back to bite them by the latter end of the campaign.
Nothing is yet set in stone but the gulf in quality between Clement and Rodgers’ teams is undeniable with the Gers looking likely to spend another season in Celtic’s shadow.
