Philippe Clement must sell Rangers captain James Tavernier after his performance in the 3-0 defeat against Celtic.
The 32-year-old was the culprit for the opening goal, he switched off as Alistair Johnston made an underlapping run and found Dazien Maeda in the six-yard box to give the Hoops an early lead.
Tavernier showed his level at Celtic Park with Billy Dodds on BBC Sport [1 September, 13:33] pointing the blame at the captain at half-time.
He said: “It’s the biggest roasting I have seen Tavernier take from Maeda in a long time – and that is not just because of the goal.”
Rangers need to sell James Tavernier in January
Somehow, after a summer of constant speculation [TEAMtalk], Tavernier remained a Rangers player past the 30 August deadline.
Clement had earmarked his skipper and long-serving right-back for a departure from the Light Blues, hoping to invest the money recouped from his sale and wages back into the rebuild of his side.
It was a surprise to the Rangers faithful to see Tavernier continue in Glasgow after approaches from both Trabzonspor and Besiktas
Dujon Sterling started the Old Firm in midfield to accommodate Tavernier in the side but it may be time to hand the reigns to the 23-year-old [Rangers Review] and fast-track a winter sale for their captain.
The skipper has been an excellent servant for Rangers throughout his ten-year spell. Still, his recent performances are a shadow of the defender who helped Steven Gerrard’s side reach the Europa League final in 2022.
There can be no passengers in the Gers’ quest to topple Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership and there is no room for sentimentality, Clement must make the best decision in the interests of the club and phase Tavernier out of the side ahead of a sale in the January transfer window.
