Rangers may end up regretting their decision to sell Scott Wright this summer after the winger scored on his Birmingham City debut on Saturday (31 August).
Joining centre-back Ben Davies at St Andrew’s Stadium, the 27-year-old arrived on a £300,000 deal [Sky Sports], a fee that might make the Gers feel short-changed after his instant impact in League One.
Wright replaced Luke Harris after 52 minutes, eventually scoring the winner in added time to send the home crowd into pandemonium.
Rangers fans could only watch on as one of their former players, who had a mixed experience in Scotland, became a fan favourite at his new club within minutes, adding to the Blues’ winning streak.
While few fans were upset to see the player leave through the Ibrox doors this summer, it is always difficult to see them doing well elsewhere, and the Gers may now be regretting the decision.
Rangers to regret Scott Wright transfer decision?
The winger made 120 appearances for the Light Blues during his three-and-a-half years at Ibrox, scoring just 12 goals in that time, so it seemed like the right time to move him on.
However, given Oscar Cortes’ injury worries, albeit him being back in training now, Clement may feel he is lacking depth on the left flank, with Rabbi Matondo the only other real option.
Wright needed no second invitation to blast his first Birmingham goal into the roof of the net, and that is the kind of tenacity and energy that the Gers might be missing as they search for the Scottish Premiership title.
The Light Blues have lifted the league trophy just once in the last decade, so Clement needs as much attacking talent and passion to beat their Old Firm rivals Celtic to the top of the table.
Despite his lack of goals, Wright understood what it meant to play for Rangers, just like he knows the same now for his new club, and that could be lacking after his move away from Ibrox this summer.
Only time will tell if the Gers regret their decision to sell the winger ahead of the transfer deadline, especially for such a small fee, but someone should keep an eye on him to see how he thrives in England.
