James Tavernier must now step up and rediscover his Rangers form after Neraysho Kasanwirjo suffered an injury on international duty.
The Dutchman appeared to be on the brink of tears after being forced off against England Under-21s on Monday (18 November) due to an apparent serious knee injury [Daily Record].
Now the Gers are said to be facing “an anxious sweat” over the 22-year-old’s fitness ahead of Dundee United’s visit to Ibrox on Saturday (23 November).
Despite not starting last time out against Hearts, his absence will be a dampener for Philippe Clement whose side will be lacking in squad depth with the versatile defender ruled out.
The Belgian will hope this will spur his captain on to perform for the Light Blues and return to his best at Ibrox.
James Tavernier must step up for Rangers after Neraysho Kasanwirjo injury
The Englishman has been a shadow of his former self this campaign for the Gers which has seen him provide just three assists while failing to score a goal in 11 Scottish Premiership games.
This hardly compares to even last season where the right back registered 24 goals and 12 assists in all competitions [Transfermarkt] despite a frustrating year for the club under Clement.
The 33-year-old may be feeling the pressure from behind him this year as Kasanwirjo and Dujon Sterling will be keen to take the skipper’s role in the side.
Now Tavernier has to prove himself and return to his best given that one of the main contenders for his right back spot looks set for a spell on the sidelines.
There is no doubt that Clement would rather have all his players available to pick from at Ibrox but if the injury to the Feyenoord loanee proves to spur his captain on to return to his best, it could prove to be somewhat beneficial in the short term.
In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd has been left baffled by the news he saw on Tuesday.
