Rangers promoting Nils Koppen from head of recruitment to technical director shows the Ibrox board are still choosing the easy route.
The Gers confirmed on X (19 November) that Koppen had been appointed as the new technical director, having been without one since Ross Wilson departed for Nottingham Forest in 2023.
Koppen, who had only been in his recruitment role for 12 months previously, will now oversee large facets of the club’s football department, despite mixed results on the transfer front since his initial appointment.
A technical director was one of several vacancies in senior off-field roles at Ibrox, but an in-house appointment won’t inspire much confidence for fans that the club are hiring best-in-class replacements.
Nils Koppen appointment could come back to bite Rangers board
Coming into any role mid-season always provides a challenge, be that for players, coaching staff or off-field officials, and as such Koppen can only be fairly judged based on last summer’s transfer dealings.
Of the Gers’ 11 new signings this summer, only five have made anything close to a significant impact at Ibrox, with Liam Kelly and Clinton Nsiala yet to play a first-team minute and Oscar Cortes out injured.
While the likes of Connor Barron have been bona-fide successes, big-money arrival Nedim Bajrami is yet to find the consistency needed to close a nine-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
As a result, it’s too early to say whether or not Koppen has succeeded in his recruitment role, making his internal promotion a head-scratcher, particularly given that a new chairman is planned to be appointed [Chris Jack, 13 November].
With chairman, CEO and director of football operations vacancies all still to be filled in Govan, it remains to be seen just how much influence Koppen will have – and if this will prove beneficial in the long term.
In other Rangers news, a Gers title-winner’s comments about the club’s progress will leave fans pointing fingers at the boardroom.
