Ibrox View: Ally McCoist gets it all wrong as he reacts to Rangers news live on air today

Ally McCoist got it all wrong as he reacted to the news about Rangers confirming Nils Koppen as their new technical director on Tuesday.

The Light Blues announced on 19 November that the director of recruitment will take on more responsibilities, including overseeing the men’s academy, football operations and performance and analysis departments, at Ibrox.

McCoist made a “brutally” honest assessment of the update but appeared to get his facts wrong as he went on to talk about Koppen’s appointment from PSV earlier this year.

“Nils Koppen from PSV, director of football recruitment, which is a start”, McCoist said live on talkSPORT [19 November, 9:49 am].

“I’m being quite brutally honest with you, I don’t think he’s got to do a lot to be better than what’s been there before because the recruitment has been miles off it both ways.

“Coming and going has been really, really poor, so we wish him all the best. I think Nils starts on 2nd January.

“And then from Brighton, Tom Taylor has been appointed head of performance.

“It’s a start because the structure of the club has been really, really poor and been needing looking at for a good while now.”

McCoist said Koppen has been brought in as the new director of recruitment, while he has been in that position for almost a year. In fact, 2 January is the date the Belgian initially took office at Ibrox.

The Gers legend’s information about Tom Taylor was also wrong as he has been serving as the club’s head of performance in Govan since December 2023.

In short, McCoist had a nightmare live on air, but the Scot must be cut some slack as he likely got confused as he tried to quickly react to the news.

Nevertheless, the former striker is not wrong about the structure needing improvement and their recruitment being underwhelming.

Koppen has also come in for criticism for his transfer strategy, with Kris Boys ripping him to shreds for signing Hamza Igamane for £1.8million in the summer.

It remains to be seen if the 39-year-old can now excel in his role as Rangers’ technical director.

In other Rangers news, this Light Blues star slapped Clement in the face after what he did away from Ibrox.
