Radu Dragusin has struggled for game time under Ange Postecoglou and has failed to impress during in his rare Tottenham displays.
The rarely-used Romanian only has one Premier League start to his name this term, having only made four league starts last season after joining from Genoa in January.
Of course, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are the first-choice centre-back partnership for the manager, but neither seems to remain available for a long period without suspension or injuries.
This looks to be the case at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium once again, with Van de Ven only managing 14 minutes on the pitch before being substituted during the 2-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday (30 October).
Holding his hamstring, there are major concerns over the Dutchman once again, though Dragusin looks to have worked his way back into the good books just in time for Spurs.
The majority of fans wanted to see him nowhere near the starting XI following his embarrassing red card against Qarabag in the Europa League last month, but he has now turned that around.
Radu Dragusin ready for starting XI spot after Tottenham v Manchester City
With both van de Ven and Romero off the pitch after 52 minutes, Dragusin was given the opportunity to prove himself against an extremely difficult opponent, albeit weakened for the EFL Cup fixture.
Postecoglou was clearly impressed, with Jay Harris taking to X [30 October], writing: “Dragusin with a towering header to put the ball out of play. Postecoglou applauds and then gives the defender a pat on the back as he runs past.”
While he only won 33 per cent of his aerial duels, he did manage to win 100 per cent of his ground duels, win a foul, and make two recoveries and five clearances, four of which were headed [FotMob].
He also maintained an 81 per cent passing accuracy, with two of those passes being made into the final third, helping Spurs to a dramatic 2-1 win over Man City to progress to the next round of the cup.
Given that the defender ranks in the top 88 percentile for aerials won, but also the top 92 percentile for non-penalty goals [FBref], there is absolutely no reason why he cannot grow into a bigger role.
