'Reality of the industry' - Finance Expert hails Tottenham after generating funds with sale

Tottenham selling Troy Parrott was sensible business that highlighted the reality of the football industry, Dan Plumley has said.

The Republic of Ireland striker was sold to AZ Alkmaar for £6.7million (BBC Sport) earlier this month, after impressing in the Eredivisie with Excelsior last season.

Parrott joined the Spurs academy set-up in 2017 but, while making a handful of first-team appearances, he has struggled to make the grade and counts loan spells with Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston on his footballing resume.

Football finance expert Plumley, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, feels the transfer is indicative of big clubs pocketing these handy fees for players who would otherwise not the game time they want.

“I think it’s the reality of the situation, it’s obviously not great for some of these players because you’d like them all to have a future at the clubs they’re connected to,” he said.

“But it’s the reality of the industry and if you can generate a decent amount of money for players who are not going to make it into your squad or your plans then you’re sensible to take that money and this would be a good example of that.

“Also for the player as well, it works both ways, clubs don’t want players who are sat doing nothing and players don’t want to be sat doing nothing if they’re not in the plans.

“Sometimes there are certain situations where it’s just a good move all around for all parties concerned.”

Troy Parrott departs Tottenham on fond terms

There was once upon a time a feeling that Parrott could have the sort of impact at Spurs that Harry Kane had after graduating through the academy.

Sadly, it has never really panned out that way and the 22-year-old was never likely to become a first-team fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Still, 10 goals in 25 Eredivisie appearances for Excelsior last term did enough to earn a move to AZ and he is still young enough to forge a good career at a high level.

Essentially, Spurs made a tidy profit, AZ got a good deal, and Parrott has a permanent home after years of being shipped around on various loan spell. He departs on fond terms.
