Everton have got a lot of ground to make up if they don’t want to find themselves in another Premier League relegation battle this season.
For the last few seasons, it’s felt like the Toffees haven’t been able to catch a break with things such as financial issues and point deductions taking centre stage.
Despite this, the club had what felt like a fairly decent transfer window throughout the summer.
One addition that was sealed late in the transfer window was Orel Mangala, with the Belgium international joining on loan from Lyon just before the 30 August deadline.
Although most fans expect the loanee to be integrated into the first-team fold quickly, they may want to think twice after his most recent international performance.
The Red Devils lost 2-0 to France on 9 September and although the midfielder only played for the final 30 minutes, he didn’t do himself much justice.
Belgian outlet GVA rated the new Toffees man a 5/10 and simply stated: “Replaced Tielemans. His twentieth cap – that says it all.”
Not only does this outline how lacklustre his performance was but it also suggests that he has a lot of work to do to get back up to Premier League standard.
Orel Mangala needs to prove his worth to Sean Dyche and Everton
There’s no denying that Mangala is a solid player. However, as his time in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest showed, it could take time.
With the promise of game time potentially made by Kevin Thelwell, Sean Dyche may not have much time before he may have to throw him into the deep end.
The Toffees’ midfield so far has consisted of Tim Iroegbunam, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Idrissa Gueye.
Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye have shown their worth as new arrivals and were stand-out performers during the 3-2 loss against Bournemouth.
While it’s still too early to cast judgment on Dyche and Thelwell’s choice to sign Mangala, he will need to get up to speed and prove himself quickly at Goodison Park.
In other Everton news, Alan Myers has delivered his verdict on Seamus Coleman’s injury he sustained while on international duty.
