Stefan Borson: Newcastle want to match Man City & Chelsea as new hire on the cards

Newcastle United could be looking to follow in the footsteps of Manchester City and Chelsea as they close in on the appointment of a property specialist.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the north-east giants are likely looking to be more creative in how they generate profit from both the property and football side of the business.

iNews reported on 25 September Newcastle will shortly confirm a new appointment to the board connected to minority owners the Reuben Brothers.

The individual is believed to have extensive experience managing the British duo’s commercial property portfolio.

The Tyneside club are looking to redevelop St James’ Park after a feasibility study was set in motion in 2022, with a decision on how to move forward with the project close to being delivered.

Newcastle hire to help with stadium redevelopment

Borson believes appointing a property expert makes perfect sense as Newcastle look to push on with the stadium redevelopment.

He told Football Insider: “I think they are probably looking around at Man City and Chelsea in particular and trying to be a bit more creative as to how they generate profit with the club at the centre.

“They will then be able to use that profit to succeed on the pitch.

“Clearly, if you are going to effectively become a part-property company and a part-sports-business franchise from a business perspective, you need a property professional running the property side of the business and football people running the football business side.

“They are almost two totally different skill sets.

“If really what we are talking about doing here is as part of the redevelopment of St James’ Park putting in a concert venue, a load of residential and some retail, then clearly that’s a property play.

“It’s likely that the current management team don’t have the expertise or the time to execute that separate business, so you would bring in effectively a property team to supplement them.

“I don’t think it’s a surprise and it makes perfect sense if that’s what they are planning to do.”
