Thierry Henry namedropped Everton in an appearance on Monday Night Football this week, but his comment was wide of the mark.
The Premier League legend, best remembered for his time at Arsenal, discussed a number of topics when speaking live on Sky Sports [16 December].
West Ham United were the main focal point after playing out a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, which relieved some pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui.
In debating the future of Lopetegui at West Ham, Henry also brought up fellow Premier League sides Everton and Newcastle United.
Thierry Henry mentions Everton on Monday Night Football
“[West Ham] were minutes away, apart from that free-kick, from winning back-to-back games, so it would have been a great result [against Bournemouth]”, Henry said.
“I hope it can give him [Lopetegui] time to perform and show what he’s about. But again, I go back to what I said before.
“Sometimes, at West Ham, Everton and Newcastle, clubs like that feel like they should be higher and doing better than what the team are actually doing.
“So, that can be something that can work against him.”
The point Henry is making is that expectations are seemingly higher at clubs like West Ham, Newcastle and Everton than elsewhere.
It goes without saying this is totally wrong. Everton fans are not expecting this current squad to be challenging for Europe, but nor should it be this constant cycle of relegation battles.
Finishing between 14th and 10th should be the realistic aim, rather than taking one step forward and two steps back all too often.
As a reminder, West Ham and Newcastle United have each enjoyed European football in recent times, with the former even lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League crown last year.
Everton fans can only dream of silverware right now. Again, though, fans understand what is realistic and what isn’t.
With the takeover now imminent, as per Goodison News sources, there is no harm in supporters getting a little excited about what will hopefully be a brighter future.
This season is already feeling like a bit of a write-off, but 2025-26 presents a chance to finally break the cycle and get involved in something other that a scrap to avoid finishing in the bottom three.
