'I want to...' - Rangers-linked player issues contract admission amid transfer speculation

Rangers target and Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean has issued an admission over his future amid exit links.

The 32-year-old Scotland told the Norwich Evening News on 20 July that he has a contract at Carrow Road and is committed to staying at the club.

He signed a long-term contract last summer when Leeds United wanted him and still has two years plus an option of an extra 12 months left to run out.

McLean said: “I don’t think that I need to speak too much on it, to be honest, in terms of if it’s true or not. It isn’t affecting me at all.

“I’m here, I want to be here and I’ll continue to be here. I’m looking forward to Oxford. I’ve always had a good relationship with the fans and I’ll continue that for the next couple of years.

“I hope [the contract] does speak volumes. It was a pretty similar situation last year when there was talk and I committed my future to the football club. The football club also committed to me. I don’t see why that would change.”

Rangers must move on from Kenny McLean transfer pursuit

McLean’s recent comments suggest a clear intention to stay at Norwich City, despite interest from Gers.

Given the Scotland international’s clear stance, it would be prudent for the Ibrox outfit to move on from this pursuit.

Pursuing a player who has openly expressed his desire to stay at his current club could lead to complications and might not result in a positive outcome for Rangers.

Focusing on alternative targets who are more open to a move would be a more sensible approach for the club.

Had the 32-year-old been forced out of Norwich if they were looking to cash in on him, he could’ve disrupted the morale in the dressing room at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement is building a side for the future and signing a midfielder in his 30s would anyway not have been an ideal move even from a financial standpoint.

Hopefully, the club have a list of alternatives they can now go on and pursue their services before the season begins.

In other Rangers news, an update has emerged on the Ibrox outfit’s quest to sign a ‘Fantastic’ attacker with initial moves already made.
