Rangers have had an offer of £500,000 for Connor Barron rejected by Aberdeen and face going to tribunal over his compensation, according to the Daily Record.

Writing on their website (25 June), the news outlet report that the Light Blues have been told by Dons chief Alan Burrows that the club are prepared to go to a hearing to get fair value for the Scotland Under-21 midfielder.

Barron signed a four-year deal at Ibrox after his contract at Pittodrie expired, and Aberdeen are due compensation after he came through their academy.

They would have been guaranteed around £525k had Barron moved abroad, but they know they can get even more at a tribunal and could net a sell-on fee too.

Rangers must avoid tribunal if they can for best deal with Aberdeen

A deal is done and Barron will be a Rangers player next season without question, but the value of the deal is yet to be decided.

On a free transfer it looks a fantastic bit of business, adding to the club’s Scottish quota and adding quality to their midfield options ahead of the 2024/25 season having lost John Lundstram and Ryan Jack.

But if the fee is driven upwards because of a tribunal and a potential sell-on clause is added onto the deal then it may make it a bit worse.

The plan is for Barron to become a huge success at Ibrox, but that could potentially see him end up moving on for a big profit in the future, and a sell-on clause would obviously damage Rangers’ bottom line.

The most important thing was getting the player in through the door and that is done, so the club deserve credit for that. But now they must strike a deal that works for everyone and avoid tribunal to keep things in their control.

In other Rangers news, the club could bankroll a new striker signing with a first-team sale amid “advanced” talks.
