Wayne Rooney cited as Leeds told not to make 'big mistake' - expert

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Leeds United against a “kneejerk” sacking of Daniel Farke after Birmingham’s critical error last term.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the 49ers should take heed of Wayne Rooney’s disastrous reign at St Andrew’s.

Farke eased the pressure after he led Leeds to a 2-0 away win at bottom club Cardiff on Saturday (21 September).

Football Insider revealed on last week (18 September) that his job is safe for now with club chiefs not ready to end his reign.

Nevertheless, the German is under pressure at Elland Road with promotion the expectation for the Yorkshire giants this term.

Farke failed to deliver a return to the Premier League last season after losing to Southampton in the playoff final.

Wyness cites Rooney as Leeds told not to sack Farke

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Birmingham is a great example of owners who thought they knew everything about football, hired Wayne Rooney and ended up in League One.

“That’s a serious example of what can go wrong when you act too quickly.

“They made some big mistakes.

“American owners can do that, but any nationality can do that – there have been terrible British owners as well.

“It’s a desire to success, but the way to that in football isn’t always so quick.

“I think Farke is a good manager, he’s good for Leeds. He’s had to readjust the squad and get going, so any kneejerk reaction would be wrong.”
